Ray Parlour discussed Hull City's decision to sack Tim Walter after a dismal start to the season

Former Hull City midfielder Ray Parlour believes that the club are a long way from where they were under Liam Rosenior, after it was announced that Tim Walter had been sacked after 17 league games.

Despite guiding the Tigers to a seventh place finish last season, finishing just one place and three points off the play-offs, Rosenior was replaced by Walter, a move that has spectacularly backfired.

Hull won just three of Walter's 17 league games in charge, and currently sit in the relegation zone, giving owner Acun Ilicali no option but to relieve the German of his duties.

Parlour believes that Rosenior was doing a good job with the Tigers, and that they could well get relegated this season unless there's a drastic improvement, showing just how far they've fallen from last season.

Ray Parlour on Hull City's managerial situation

Parlour, who made 15 appearances for Hull City during the 2006/07 season, predicted that letting Rosenior leave would come back to haunt the club, and believes that the improving quality of the Championship leaves them in danger of relegation.

The former England international told Football League World, via NetBet Online Casino: "This is a tough time for Hull City. I did say that letting Rosenior leave could be a bad move, and it has transpired to be that way.

"The Championship is so tough and Hull City had improved year-on-year and Rosenior was doing a very good job.

"Hull City need to watch out, as if they don’t improve then they could well get relegated, which is a long way from when they were challenging for the play-offs under Rosenior."

The Tigers are currently managerless and will be led by Andy Dawson until a new boss is appointed, and it looks as if he's got a tough job on his hands to ensure he picks up some points during his tenure and that Hull don't get cut adrift in the relegation zone.

The 2023/24 season was Rosenior's only full season in charge of Hull City, and he led them to a 7th place finish, which was a very respectable return.

Ilicali clearly had ambitions of the play-offs and reaching the Premier League, so he pulled the trigger, but in hindsight, he'd have been better off giving Rosenior at least another full season in charge to see if he could do so, particularly with the division not as strong as this year.

Rosenior wasn't perfect and sometimes attracted criticism for his style of play, and there was a difference in terms of 'football philosophy' between him and Ilicali, but he's now doing well in Ligue 1 with Strasbourg, while Hull are in the Championship relegation battle, meaning he's definitely come out on the right side.

However, Hull need to put Walter's poor spell at the club behind them and move on quickly, otherwise they're in serious danger of relegation, as Parlour mentioned.

The next appointment is crucial, and one that Ilicali can ill-afford to get wrong if he wants Hull to remain a Championship club.
