Even before the excitement of ‘Florian Friday’ kicked in, Liverpool were already creating waves in the transfer window as it was announced a £40 million fee had been agreed with Bournemouth for Milos Kerkez.

The Hungarian has been one of the Premier League’s most exciting left-backs since his arrival from AZ Alkmaar in 2023.

Kerkez will join up with his national teammate Dominik Szoboszlai at Anfield, provided he passes a medical early next week.

Competition for a place in Arne Slot’s starting XI will be fierce, with the experienced Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson already at the club. Tsimikas had been expected to make way, allowing Robertson to both compete with and nurture Kerkez as he matures.

The Scotland captain has been defiant, however, and believes he is still good enough to be the first choice, either at Liverpool or Atlético Madrid, who are rumoured to be interested in the 31-year-old.

On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked the Liverpool Echo’s LFC correspondent, Paul Gorst, for his thoughts on the Kerkez deal.

‘HE’S ALWAYS READY TO LEARN’ – FORMER TEAMMATE SPEAKS ABOUT LIVERPOOL TARGET MILOS KERKEZ

Paul said:

“Liverpool will be getting a 21-year-old, hugely exciting full-back with, again, his best years ahead of him.

“The knock-on effect that has for the players already in the squad we’re going to come on to, but I think from a purely recruitment point of view, it’s another hugely exciting one.

“Having seen him at Bournemouth last season, he was fantastic, wasn’t he?  He was aggressive, he motors up and down the wing, he’s got a really good left foot, chips in with assists, and scored a couple of goals as well.

“A traditional full-back in a modern sense, if you see what I mean, in terms of motoring down the line, very much attack-focused, aggressive, looking to get to the byline, get assists, get those metrics up.

“I think it’s going to be a hugely exciting one to see him and Frimpong on opposite flanks next season. Pace, power – it will really give Liverpool a new dimension.”

REDMEN REACTS

Many Liverpool fans have recently found themselves in the strange situation of celebrating a league title whilst being able to offer a variety of ways in which the club can improve. One of the most common shouts for a possible upgrade has come in the left-back position, with Andy Robertson coming under fire for what was at times a mistake-laden 24/25 campaign. The Scotsman did manage to put in some improved displays in the early months of 2025, but with Kostas Tsimikas never looking likely to displace him as first choice, the appeal of a player like Milos Kerkez became obvious. It appears as if the LFC hierarchy agrees and have agreed to splash out a hefty fee for the young Hungarian star. Kerkez appears to have the attacking.
