Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe believes Lewis Miley has the tools to emulate former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard.
The 18-year-old made his first Premier League start of the season against Nottingham Forest on Sunday, scoring his side’s opening goal in a 4-3 win at St James’ Park.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Liverpool, Howe said the all-action kind of player Gerrard was during his successful career with the Reds can provide a good example for the youngster to follow.
“Steven Gerrard, I think, is a great one to look at because I think Steven had that same frame Lewie progresses, but he had that yard of pace, he could go box-to-box and he could score goals,” the Magpies manager said.
Miley, who has already started Champions League games against PSG and Inter Milan, still has plenty of development to undergo. But Howe backs the teenager to succeed at Newcastle.
“He has a really bright future, but he will have all the pitfalls that young players have. He has to stay humble, he has to stay level,” the 47-year-old said.
“He needs to concentrate on his training, he needs to listen to his coaches and take on a lot of information that he will get and take it step by step.
