England struggled in their opening game of Euro 2025, losing 2-1 to France but they bounced back in style to defeat the Netherlands 4-0 before securing qualification for the last eight with a comprehensive 6-1 win over rivals Wales. The Lionesses then came from 2-0 down to eventually beat Sweden on penalties to progress to the final four.
Italy started off Euro 2025 with a 1-0 win against Belgium, before rallying to a 1-1 draw against ten-player Portugal. They rounded off their group stage campaign with a 3-1 defeat to World Champions Spain. The Italians would go on to beat Group A winners Norway 2-1 in the quarter-finals to book their place in the last four.
England XI (4-2-3-1): Hampton; Bronze, Williamson, Greenwood, Carter; Walsh, Stanway; James, Toone, Hemp; Russo.
Italy XI (5-3-2): Giuliani; Di Guglielmo, Salvai, Linari, Oliviero, Bonansea; Giugliano, Severini, Caruso; Girelli, Cantore.
England manager Sarina Wiegman condemned the racist abuse suffered by Jess Carter during the tournament:
“It’s ridiculous and disgusting what is happening and that goes beyond football. We had to pay attention to that and support Jess. Of course, she’s not the only one who gets this abuse or racism. That’s why she wanted to address it and she’s fully supported by the team. I think it starts with everyone taking responsibility. And then you have the bodies that are responsible for all these platforms that should also do something.”
Italy manager Andrea Soncic believe they have what it takes to beat England:
“The historical importance of this game is known to everyone. We want to reach the final, make our dream come true. It is an important match because it is an important step on our journey. We are convinced that we have the weapons to win the game, and we have the utmost respect for the quality of the English players and their international experience.”
