England reached the semi-finals of Women’s Euro 2025 after a dramatic and crazy penalty shootout win against Sweden.
The Lionesses were outperformed by Sweden in the first-half but fought back valiantly in the latter stages of the second-half after some brilliant substitutions by Sarina Wiegman.
Chloe Kelly played a part in both goals, with Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang scoring to send the game to extra-time and then penalties.
What followed was one of the most dramatic penalty shootouts in women’s football history.
Sweden had two chances to secure the penalty shootout win, but in the end it was the Lionesses who progressed to the semi-finals.
Only five of 14 penalties taken were scored between the two sides, with Alessia Russo, Chloe Kelly and Lucy Bronze scoring for the Lionesses.
England pulled off a miracle penalty shootout victory in their Euro 2025 quarter-final, as Sweden had several chances to put away the Lionesses.
Sweden were leading 2-0 after 78 minutes following first-half goals from Kosovare Asllani and Stina Blackstenius.
However, two goals in two minutes from Lucy Bronze and Michelle Agyemang pulled the Lionesses level.
During the penalty shootout, Sweden had a chance to win on their fifth spot-kick, following misses from Lauren James, Beth Mead and Alex Greenwood.
Sweden goalkeeper Jennifer Falk, who kept out those three players, took the fifth penalty but blazed it over the bar.
They had another chance to win after Grace Clinton’s penalty was saved, only for Hannah Hampton to keep out Sofia Jakobsson’s penalty.
England would take the victory after Lucy Bronze showed no nerves when she sent her penalty down the middle, before a nervous Smilia Holmberg blasted her spot-kick over the bar.
Former England star Steph Houghton congratulated the team writing: “Wow! Unbelievable girls.”
ITV presenter Laura Woods said she was part of the ‘Hannah Hampton fan club’ and in another tweet said: “Also, just to add. I bloody love Lucy Bronze.”
Fans also flocked onto social media after the crazy penalty shootout which England just about survived to win 3-2.
@Dobbo0107 wrote: “That was probably the funniest/craziest penalty shootouts I’ve ever seen, either way, just about got the job done.”
@AngelDobby commented: Absolutely incredible comeback!! Not good for my anxiety tho lol. Pounding headache! Emotional rollercoaster!! Well done for pulling it back. Penalties are awful for everybody and my heart went out to both sides but soooo happy we won.”
Harry Blannin said: “Not every time you miss four penalties but still win the shootout.”
@AlexdSmiff posted: “Tension , drama and excitement terms it was no doubt up there. But in terms of an exhibition of kicking a ball from 12 yards it was woeful. Except Lucy Bronze, absolute warrior. But it’s the results that matter, one team’s in a semi the others are on the couch. Well done England.”
Another Twitter user also praised Bronze, writing: “Talk about stepping up when all around is madness. Well done Lucy Bronze.”
There was also some questioning over Sweden’s decision to place goalkeeper Jennifer Falk as their fifth penalty taker when they could have wrapped up the match. Falk saved three penalties but blazed her penalty over the bar.
One fan wrote: “The audacity of Sweden to send their goalkeeper up to score the 5th and winning penalty was one of the most outrageous things I’ve ever seen in football.”
Another said: “I am still baffled as to how Sweden thought it was a good idea to have the keeper on the 5th? Surely you keep her to the last of the sudden death.”
England will have to put aside their celebrations and turn their focus to their semi-final clash with Italy at Euro 2025.
Italy progressed to the last-four with a 2-1 victory over Norway, where Cristiana Girelli scored a 90th minute.
According to the UK’s top betting websites, England are 2/5 favourites to beat Italy on Tuesday, July 22nd.
Italy are priced at 9/2 while a draw which would see the game go to extra time and potentially penalties, is at 11/4.
