On Wednesday, FIFA published the full details of the distribution scheme for the $1 billion purse for this summer's 2025 Club World Cup, which will include the Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami and be hosted in stadiums across the United States.

Every team will get an appearance fee, though the total fee varries by confederation, with Concacaf teams earning a guaranteed $9.55 million. From there, there are additional financial inceitives hinging on every stage of the tournament:

So in theory, the maximum Seattle or Miami could earn is $97.175 million if they were to play a perfect group stage and then win the whole tournament.

But what's more realistic playing against the world's best clubs? Well, some of that depends on the draw.

Realistic forecasts

As the "host" club, Miami received a seeded draw and a much more favorable group, avoiding any clubs from Europe's Big Five leagues in Group A.

Even so, the Herons will be underdogs in two of their group games against Palmeiras and FC Porto. Taking five points from those three games and reaching the round of 16 would be considered a fabulous success for an MLS club, and would be worth a total of $21.05 million. That probably represents a realistic ceiling for Miami.

Meanwhile, Seattle's draw is much more difficult in Group B, including Paris St.-Germain, Botafogo and Atletico Madrid. Brian Schmetzer's group will be considerable underdogs in all three matches. And earning two or three points would have to be viewed as a successful tournament given the schedule. Barring somethign very unexpected, a good tournament would probably see Seattle bringing in $11,55 million.

A little goes a long way

Even $9.55 million is a significant windfall for MLS clubs, who operate on much smaller budgets than their Club World Cup peers. The average MLS salary last season was a shade under $600,000, per figures provided by the MLS Players Association. The minimum appearance fee would be enough to employ 16 players for a full season on that salary.

In terms of other purses available to MLS clubs, both the Leagues Cup and MLS Cup are estimated to pay the winner around $2 million in prize money. The winner of the Concacaf Champions Cup receives $5 million.
