We looked at how much Rangers may need to pay Sheffield Wednesday winger Djeidi Gassama in wages if he joins the club this summer.

It has been a nightmare summer so far for Sheffield Wednesday, and it could be set to get even worse for the troubled Championship club amid reports of interest in some of their key players.

Those who have handed in their notices could be able to leave the club and become free agents as early as next week if their wages are not paid, and according to journalist Alan Nixon, Chansiri is now looking to sell some of Wednesday's stars in a desperate bid to raise funds.

Gassama joined Wednesday from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2023, and after an inconsistent first year at Hillsborough, he was one of the club's key players last season as they secured a 12th-placed finish in the Championship.

Chansiri is believed to have paid some members of the Owls squad to protect their transfer value and avoid them walking out for free, but as he is in urgent need of funds, he could now start a fire sale, with Gassama one of the most likely to depart.

That could open the door for other clubs to make a move for Gassama, and The Star reported on Tuesday that Rangers are weighing up whether to swoop for the winger as new manager Russell Martin continues his rebuild at Ibrox.

Martin has brought in a number of players from England this summer after taking over as Gers boss, with Max Aarons, Emmanuel Fernandez, Joe Rothwell and Thelo Aasgaard arriving in Glasgow, and journalist Alan Biggs claims there is a "high chance" Gassama could be the next star from south of the border to join the club.

As speculation about Gassama's potential move to Rangers gathers pace, we looked at how much they may need to pay him in wages.

According to Capology, Gassama currently earns just £1,500 per week and £78,000 per year at Wednesday, although it should be stressed that those figures are an estimate.

Despite his importance to the team, Gassama is one of the Owls' lowest-paid players, and he receives significantly less than some of the club's top earners, including Barry Bannan (£24,038 per week), Yan Valery, Dominic Iorfa, Nathaniel Chalobah, Josh Windass and Ike Ugbo (all £20,000 per week) and Callum Paterson and Jamal Lowe (both £18,000 per week).

With that in mind, Gassama could be set for a sizeable wage increase if he was to join Rangers, and with the club now under the ownership of 49ers Enterprises, they may be able to win the race for the winger by offering him a lucrative salary.

Gassama is in the final year of his contract at Hillsborough, but even amid Wednesday's current financial problems, the Frenchman is believed to be "very happy" at the club and is not pushing for an exit.

However, with no sign of an imminent takeover in sight, Chansiri may need to sell players in order to raise the funds needed to meet his financial obligations to the Owls, and Gassama could be one of those on the move.
