Wrexham AFC have agreed a club-record deal
Wrexham have agreed a club-record deal to sign Ipswich Town forward Nathan Broadhead.
Phil Parkinson’s side kicked off their return to the Championship with a 2-1 defeat at Southampton, with two stoppage-time goals from the Saints denying the Welsh outfit a brilliant opening day victory.
The Red Dragons put this behind them however to spark a comeback of their own, overcoming a two-goal deficit to defeat Hull City on penalties in the EFL Cup.
Wrexham’s pursuit of Broadhead has been well-documented this summer, with it previously reported by the East Anglia Daily Times that a transfer in the region of £7 million was to be completed.
Now, as per Sky Sports’ Anthony Joseph via X, the Red Dragons have agreed a club record deal to bring the 27-year-old to Wales.
The fee is believed to be £10 million, dwarfing the previous record of £5 million set when Lewis O’Brien was acquired earlier this summer.
Ipswich were thought to be keen on securing their own attacking reinforcements before commissioning the deal, with Chuba Akpom’s arrival giving the green light for Broadhead to exit.
The forward netted two Premier League goals last term but struggled to leave a lasting impact on the top-flight, much like the rest of Ipswich’s squad.
His previous two seasons in the EFL were more impressive however, scoring 13 times and providing three assists as the Tractor Boys secured promotion in the 2023/24 Championship campaign.
Broadhead also featured heavily the year prior when Ipswich finished second in League One, bagging eight goals and contributing a further five assists in just 19 appearances.
On the surface, Wrexham have acquired an experienced EFL goalscorer who can cause problems for opposition defences.
These operators are always useful to have across 46 games, especially when encountering some of the division’s more stubborn backlines.
However, Parkinson traditionally sets up in a system that favours wing-backs, with natural wingers such as Broadhead not often utilised.
This therefore raises questions as to how the 27-year-old will slot into Wrexham’s side and if the manager will have to tweak his system to accommodate the player.
The forward knows what it takes to secure promotion to the Premier League and that expertise will be invaluable for the Red Dragons, shown by the substantial amount of money they are willing to offload for his services.
