FLW takes a look at Viktor Gyokeres' earnings during his time at Coventry City.
Viktor Gyokeres' time at Coventry City was filled with goals and excitement as the Sky Blues gave the young Swede the platform to transform his career.
The 26-year-old was signed from Brighton and Hove Albion for £1 million after a loan spell in which he scored three goals in 19 appearances, and it’s fair to say that his brief stint there didn’t fully reflect what was to come.
Across the next two seasons, he scored a combined 40 goals and provided 17 assists as he became one of Mark Robins' catalysts for them pushing up the Championship table.
In 2022-23 he almost helped them get over the line into the Premier League, but they came up just short in the play-off final as Fankaty Dabo's penalty miss sent Luton Town to the Premier League.
Nonetheless, Gyokeres' two-and-a-half years at the CBS Arena were seasons to remember, and he eventually brought an end to his Sky Blues career when he made the move to Sporting CP in a deal worth €24 million.
With his time at Coventry in mind, Football League World has decided to work out the striker's total earnings during his time at the club.
According to Capology, when Viktor Gyokeres initially joined Coventry City on loan, he was earning a weekly wage of £3,462. This was on the lower end compared to other players in their squad.
However, even after securing a permanent deal at the CBS Arena, he continued to earn the same amount throughout the following two seasons.
This meant that across a season he would net £180,000 and, over 30 months, the striker's overall earnings at the club stood at £450,000.
Looking at players who were at the club during a similar period to him, the likes of Gustavo Hamer and Ben Sheaf were almost earning double, with their weekly wages reported to be £6,538 and £7,500 respectively.
This is a staggering figure, especially when considering the impact he had on Robins' side. Had he been offered a new contract during that period, his wage would undoubtedly have increased significantly to match that of his counterparts who were having a similar impact to him.
Since moving to Portugal, the Swedish striker has gained significant attention and is now regarded as one of the most sought-after attackers in the world.
Averaging just under a goal per game, his impact is now more accurately reflected in his wages, with the Sporting player earning an estimated £38,265 per week. This totals just under £2 million annually, meaning that by the end of this season, the striker will have accumulated double that amount across his two seasons.
Of course, should he make a move to another club, that wage figure is likely to soar, and it would come as no surprise if he were to earn nearly four times his current salary.
When compared to what he was earning at Coventry, this is truly remarkable. However, Gyökeres has worked tirelessly for this success and is undoubtedly deserving of his financial reward.
