Leyton Orient play Charlton Athletic in the League One play-off final at Wembley on Sunday, but how many tickets have the clubs sold for this match?
The League One play-off final between Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient at Wembley on Sunday afternoon is an all-London affair and a big crowd is expected for the match.
Charlton Athletic and Leyton Orient go head-to-head in the League One play-off final at Wembley on Sunday afternoon, but in some respects a battle between the two clubs has already begun.
One of the questions that provokes the most interest in the build-up to such a match is how many tickets each club has sold, and both Charlton and Orient have posted impressive numbers this week.
Charlton Athletic ended their season in 4th place in League One on 85 points, and beat Wycombe Wanderers 1-0 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals to book their place at Wembley.
Ticket sales for their big day out have certainly gone briskly. Both clubs were allocated 36,945 tickets for this match, to be sold on a block-by-block basis in an order determined by Wembley Stadium. And on Wednesday, Charlton confirmed that they had sold out their initial allocation and had requested more.
They also confirmed that they would be receiving a further 1,400, meaning that - presuming that they sell this extra allocation out as well - there will be at least 38,345 people cheering them on at Wembley on Sunday afternoon.
Leyton Orient finished 6th in League One and required a penalty shootout to get past Stockport County in their play-off semi-final after drawing 3-3 on aggregate over two legs. When tickets went on sale for the final on Monday, they sold 10,000 in just a few hours, and by the 21st May the Leyton Orientear fanzine was reporting that they'd sold more than 22,000 tickets themselves.
This all means that the total attendance for this match will be at least 60,000, and that it could yet increase further.
These two sides may be meeting on Sunday for a place in the Championship, but they are very different types of club.
Charlton are a former Premier League club, and their average attendance throughout the 2024/25 season was 15,255, the fourth-highest in League One.
By comparison, Leyton Orient have been a National League club within the last decade, and their average attendance for the 2024/25 season was 7,834, the 16th-highest in the division.
But Orient do at least have one metric on their side. With Brisbane Road only having a capacity of 9,271, they had a higher percentage of seats filled, at 84.5%, while The Valley holds 27,111, meaning that their percentage of seats sold during the season was 56.2% full.
Regardless of the result on Sunday afternoon, both clubs may be investigating how they can turn a few more of those going to Wembley for this match into more regular attendees in the future, regardless of which division they turn out to be playing in next season.
