How Vincent Kompany led Bayern Munich back to Bundesliga glory

When Bayern Munich opted to make Vincent Kompany their new coach, there were some who questioned whether a young tactician who was previously demoted with English side Burnley FC would be ready to step up to one of the giants of the world game. A little under a year later, Vincent Kompany has answered his doubters with the Bundesliga title.

It's clear that Bayern's management saw potential in Kompany, believing he could rejuvenate the team and restore domestic dominance following Bayer Leverkusen's stunning double in 2023/24. "He was on our list from the start because I think he is a huge coaching talent," said Bayern sporting director Max Eberl upon the Belgian's appointment.

The decision ultimately proved a masterstroke, with Kompany stepping into the Thomas Tuchel-shaped hole and steering Bayern back to the German football summit, while laying the groundwork for a promising new era.

A strong start

Kompany's tenure began impressively. Second-tier Ulm were dispatched 4-0 in the DFB Cup, before Bayern won their opening four Bundesliga matches – scoring 16 goals – and obliterated Dinamo Zagreb 9-2 in their first UEFA Champions League assignment.

Those early results helped Kompany get players and fans on board with his stewardship, while laying the groundwork for a successful campaign.

Tactical revolution

Bayern are always required to attack and entertain and Kompany has been an ideal fit in that regard. Much has been made of his innovative 2-4-4 formation when in possession. Wingers such as Michael Olise and Leroy Sané are encouraged to stay wide, while Bayern’s midfielders and full-backs move into the opposition’s half to dominate the ball. In the Bundesliga this season, no team has matched Bayern for average possession (64 percent), shots or goals.

It is not all about attack, though. Kompany improved Bayern’s defence by settling on a regular back four. “He provided clarity,” Bayern great Philipp Lahm said. “ Minjae Kim and Dayot Upamecano are playing regularly. That gives them the self-confidence.”

Kompany has repeatedly made positive interventions during games. One example came in the 1-1 at Borussia Dortmund in November. Trailing 1-0 at half-time, his words proved crucial. “He was focused, analytical,” said club captain Manuel Neuer. “He made the difference for us in the second half against Dortmund.”

With a clear hierarchy and playing style, and a squad that trusts his judgement, Bayern have reasserted themselves as the Bundesliga’s most well-oiled machine.

Communication key

Fluent in English, French, Dutch, and German, Kompany has been able to effectively convey his ideas to a diverse squad. Initially conducting training sessions in English, he led press conferences in German from the get-go and encouraged foreign stars to learn the language.

His leadership resonated with his players. Not that it came as a surprise. “He is an absolute leader with an impeccable character who always leads the way,” said Sané of his former Manchester City teammate-turned-boss.

When it comes to coaching, Kompany tailors his communication to individuals, understanding the different messages required for each. “What sets his work apart is that he has a good relationship with each and every one of us, in a unique way,” said midfielder João Palhinha. “It's important for the team spirit – no one feels left alone.”

This personalised approach helped build trust and respect within the squad, contributing to a harmonious team dynamic.

Mr. Motivator

Kompany fosters a culture of accountability and continuous improvement, encouraging his players to push their limits and strive for excellence.

“He told me it’s OK to make mistakes in football,” said Upamecano of a coach who has brought out the best in him this season. “All he asks is that when you make a mistake, you fix it. I feel his trust.”

Kompany is a coach with a capital 'C'. In February this year, Jamal Musiala discussed his head coach’s influence. “I spoke a lot with Vincent when he arrived,” said the 21-year-old. “He challenged me to improve myself in a few areas – getting into the box, finishing from close range, scoring simple goals. He’s helped me take my game to another level.”

It’s a feeling echoed throughout the squad, as the likes of Kane, Joshua Kimmich and Serge Gnabry and others have talked up Kompany’s ability to motivate and improve players.

Room for improvement

Yet there were mitigating circumstances – Neuer was sent off early in the cup defeat to Leverkusen, while a huge injury list – including Neuer, Upamecano and Musiala – dealt a major blow to their European ambitions. A little more luck could make a huge difference next campaign.

Bundesliga glory

Despite those cupsets, Bayern achieved their primary objective: reclaiming the Bundesliga title. They led the way for much of the season, clinching wins as Leverkusen drew too often. Their two showdowns against Xabi Alonso's side – billed as potential title-deciders – both ended with the spoils shared.

February’s return fixture at the BayArena was expertly managed. Leverkusen dominated possession and chances, but Kompany’s players kept them at arm’s length in a superb defensive display.

The future looks bright

Kompany's first season as Bayern coach has been impressive. He has proven himself more than capable of coaching at the highest level by guiding Bayern to Bundesliga glory.

Another season like this one, and people might finally forget about that relegation with Burnley.
