Juventus were held to a 0-0 draw against Club Brugge on Matchday 7 of the UEFA Champions League, league phase. A quiet first half gave way to a livelier second period, but neither team managed to capitalise on the chances they created.

A subdued first half

The beginning of the match was played at a slow tempo with some sloppy mistakes by both sides. The first chance came in the 2nd minute, when an error by the Bianconeri defence allowed Ferran Jutgla to let off a shot from the edge of the box that went wide. Juventus struggled to find their rhythm, while Club Brugge tried to exploit space out wide to no avail.

In the 27th minute, Manuel Locatelli did well to find Samuel Mbangula in the box, but the winger was unable to find the killer pass, and Kyriani Sabbe was able to close him down and divert the ball behind for a corner. That was Juve’s only real attack of the opening stages. At the other end, Club Brugge tried to attack through Christos Tzolis and Jutgla, but the Juventus defence - led by Federico Gatti and Pierre Kalulu - managed the threat without any major difficulty.

The 0-0 scoreline at the interval fully reflected the story of a first half devoid of chances.

A livelier second half, but still no goals

The second half started with a sensational chance for the hosts in the 49th minute: a mistake by Michele Di Gregorio in the box led to the ball falling to Hans Vanaken, who in turn teed up Jutgla who skewed his effort wide of the target from a good position. Juventus responded immediately in the 52nd minute, when Locatelli played Mbangula through and the winger did well to pick out Nico Gonzalez in the centre of the area. However, the Argentine forward was unable to take the ball in his stride, and the ball fell to Douglas Luiz, who fired his effort over the crossbar.

The Bianconeri tried to freshen up their attack with the introduction of Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao in the 65th minute. In the 71st minute, Conceicao broke free on the left and delivered a cross for Teun Koopmeiners, whose header grazed the post.

Club Brugge remained a threat and responded in the 74th minute, with Gustaf Nilsson attempting a volley from Chemsdine Talbi's cross, but it went high over the crossbar. In the closing stages, Juventus pushed for the lead: Locatelli struck a dangerous shot from distance in the 86th minute, but Simon Mignolet made a important save, parrying it behind for a corner.
