Breaking news hit Merseyside as it has been revealed that Liverpool have reached verbal agreement in principle with Bayer Leverkusen for the signing of Florian Wirtz, in what would be a club record fee of €150 million, including add-ons.

During an episode of Transfer Insight, we spoke to Stefan Bienkowski from Transfermarkt, who regards him as one of Europe’s most complete midfielders.

“He’s got a bit of everything- the comparison that keeps coming to mind is Mesut Ozil.”

“He is a mercurial player, unpredictable, technically gifted and always capable of unlocking a defence.”

At Leverkusen, Wirtz has thrived in a fluid role- typically deployed as a left-sided inside forward in a 4-3-3 setup- but his natural fit is as a central playmaker.

His dribbling, exquisite through balls, and ability to shoot from a distance make him a consistent threat in and around the box.

Stefan stated, “he excels when perched on that left wing, but frequently drifts inside to influence the game centrally.”

For Liverpool, Wirtz represents a potential upgrade in the number 10 role currently held by Dominik Szoboszlai. Whilst Szoboszlai has brought energy and quality, Florian offers a higher ceiling in terms of end product.

Stefan identified that the German is “tactically flexible” and that the contrast, yet compatibility, between him and the Reds’ current midfield options is striking.

Whilst Harvey Elliott brings work rate and tenacity, he lacks playmaking sophistication, which Wirtz offers.
