Lamine Yamal is already being seen as one of the frontrunners for the prestigious award. While nothing is guaranteed yet, the Rocafonda native is clearly in a strong position at just 18 years of age.
Regardless of the final outcome, Yamal’s influence at FC Barcelona continues to grow. He is already considered a cornerstone of the team’s future and a legitimate Ballon d’Or contender. Weighing in on the topic, his teammate and fellow Spaniard Gavi recently shared his thoughts.
Speaking to Diario AS, Gavi expressed full support for Yamal’s chances but emphasized that time is still on his side:
I hope he does. If not this year, he’s only 18 and still very young. Being among the favorites already is something special. I’m happy with everything he’s doing with us.
Gavi also addressed the club’s recent transfer activity, particularly the collapse of a potential move for Nico Williams. Rather than dwelling on missed opportunities, the Barcelona midfielder praised the arrival of Marcus Rashford:
Everyone knows Nico is a great player — he always proves it with the national team. I’m happy Marcus joined us because he’s an incredible player. We’re very happy with his signing.
Having impressed so far during preseason, both Rashford and Yamal have showcased their talents recently against FC Seoul. Moreover, even Gavi himself continues to excel, managing to score a brilliant goal against the Korean side yesterday and giving a solid performance for the team while getting to wear the captain’s armband.
