As Liverpool prepares to take on Wolves in their next Premier League clash, the Anfield Index podcast featuring Dave Hendrick and Karl Matchett offers a deep dive into what to expect from this crucial fixture. Wolves, under manager Gary O’Neil, have had a rough start to the season, with only a point separating them from the bottom of the table. Meanwhile, Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, looks to maintain momentum in their quest for a top-four finish.
Wolves have been hit hard by injuries this season. “No Mosquera for the rest of the season, and Boubacar Traoré is out until January,” said Hendrick, highlighting just how tough things are for the Midlands club. With several key players sidelined, Wolves face a daunting task against Liverpool, a team brimming with attacking talent.
In their previous outings, Wolves have struggled to keep goals out, conceding a whopping 14 goals in their first five matches. As Hendrick put it, “Even though six came in one game, eight goals in four is still too much.” He went on to add, “You’re needing two goals a game just to get a draw, and this Wolves side isn’t built to score two goals per game.” Indeed, the team has averaged just one goal per game so far, which spells trouble when you’re constantly chasing matches.
The defensive woes are compounded by the fact that Wolves are down to the bare bones in defence. Hendrick noted that Wolves may have to rely on Craig Dawson and Santiago Bueno as their central defensive pairing, stating, “That could be very lacking in foot speed against a quick Liverpool attack.” With their defensive frailties exposed, Wolves will need to rely heavily on a strong midfield and an organized structure to have any hope of containing Liverpool’s high-flying forwards.
Liverpool, on the other hand, come into this game as clear favourites. With a dynamic forward line that includes the likes of Mohamed Salah and Darwin Núñez, Wolves will have their hands full. As Hendrick remarked, “Wolves’ defence will struggle against Liverpool’s attack, especially with their centre-backs lacking pace.” This presents a significant challenge, particularly with the likes of Salah in peak form, capable of stretching any defence.

Arne Slot has his own decisions to make, particularly in terms of who to start between the posts. Alisson Becker, who has had fitness concerns, may or may not be risked for this match. Hendrick shared his thoughts on the situation, saying, “If Alisson isn’t 100% fit, there’s no problem with playing Kelleher, especially against a team struggling in attack like Wolves.” Given Liverpool’s solid backline with Van Dijk and Konaté, the goalkeeper selection may not make a huge difference against Wolves.
For Wolves, this match is pivotal. Sitting near the bottom of the Premier League table, they are desperate for points. Gary O’Neil’s side cannot afford another loss. Hendrick expressed his concerns, stating, “If Wolves lose to Liverpool, Brentford, and Man City, they’ll have just one point after nine games.” Such a scenario would likely leave Wolves facing a relegation battle, and potentially, the end of O’Neil’s tenure.
As for Liverpool, this match offers an opportunity to consolidate their position in the top four. With the likes of Chelsea and Manchester City pushing for the title, every point is crucial. Hendrick pointed out that while Wolves may not be in top form, “Liverpool must take advantage of Wolves’ defensive issues and go for the win.”
O’Neil has tried to mould Wolves into a tough-to-beat side, focusing on defensive solidity. However, this has not gone to plan. “Wolves have conceded too many goals, and that has to change quickly,” said Hendrick. Wolves’ best hope is to disrupt Liverpool’s rhythm and make it a physical battle. But as Hendrick noted, “The problem is they’re leaking goals, and they’re not creating enough chances either.”
Wolves have been inconsistent in their attacking play, largely due to their injuries and a lack of depth. Their midfield trio of André Gomes, Mario Lemina, and João Gomes is solid but lacks creativity. Matias Cunha, arguably their most dangerous player, will have to deliver a top performance if Wolves are to pose any threat.
This Premier League fixture sees two teams with contrasting ambitions. Liverpool are eyeing a title challenge, while Wolves are fighting for survival. As Hendrick summarized, “Wolves are in a tough spot, and Liverpool needs to take advantage of their weaknesses.” With Wolves’ injury concerns and Liverpool’s attacking prowess, all signs point to a dominant performance from the Reds.
