Rooney Questions Amorim’s Future as Man Utd Form Sparks Worry

Rooney’s honest assessment after Grimsby defeat

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, Wayne Rooney gave a frank reaction to Manchester United’s Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town, calling it “disheartening”. He said, “There’s something not right. I think that’s clear for everyone to see.” Rooney highlighted how the loss, with many of United’s strongest players involved, showed deeper problems: “None of the players on that pitch should be losing to a fourth division side.”

Rooney’s concerns extended to player mentality, referencing a star striker’s penalty decision: “That would be on the player, because a manager would never put a player up to go first or second if the player didn’t want to take a penalty.”

Concerns over Amorim’s approach and confidence

The podcast focused heavily on Ruben Amorim’s position. Rooney expressed alarm over the manager’s post-match demeanour, describing him as “at breaking point”. He added, “There’s something broken,” referencing Amorim’s words criticising players. “When you’re doing an interview at the end of a game, you have to protect your players… but you have to protect them.”

Rooney noted that the pressures of Old Trafford were impacting Amorim: “There’s the media team, the commercial team, the fans, the media… there’s a pressure with Manchester United which he will never have felt before.”

Dressing room culture and reaction expectations

Rooney called for a stronger response from players: “As a fan I’d want to see some sort of reaction. Burnley for me, if I don’t see the players coming out with a bit of fire… I don’t know what I can say about this club after that.” He reflected on past standards: “That’s how it used to be when teams came to Old Trafford… just be relentless and outrun them, outpower them.”

The episode also explored tactical issues, with Rooney saying: “There’s too much rotation going on and players are getting lost… if it carries on like that then unfortunately I don’t see how it moves forward.”

Rooney’s perspective on United’s wider situation

Rooney acknowledged the difficulty of finding solutions mid-season: “The problem we’ve got now is who would want to take it?… It’s one of the biggest clubs in the world and you probably look, man, you’re sitting there thinking, ‘Not now’.”

Despite the turmoil, Rooney expressed hope for the future: “I think it will get back. No doubt about that. It’s too big a club not to. But when you’re in this moment, it is very difficult to watch.”
