Real Madrid were desperately disappointing during their 2-0 Champions League defeat at Liverpool on Wednesday night, and much of the criticism on the back of this has been aimed squarely at Kylian Mbappe. In the absence of Vinicius Junior, the French forward failed to step up, and also missed a crucial penalty when the match was poised at 1-0.
Carlo Ancelotti backed his player in the immediate aftermath of the Anfield showdown, but the press in Mbappe’s homeland have not been so forgiving. As per Relevo, RMC Sport’s assessment of his performance was particularly damning.
“Even the way he shoots on goal is horrible. He emanates concern, he is not even a soccer player anymore. On the pitch he no longer does anything, he achieves nothing, he can neither run nor move. He is at the bottom of the mine.”
Le Parisien labelled Mbappe as a “shipwreck”, while L’Equipe called it one of the 25-year-old’s darkest moments as a footballer.
“Without Vinicius he suffered the comparison and could not assume the role of leader. It will be a night that he will have to forget soon – he missed many passes, he lost a ball that caused the first chance for the net, he missed a poorly executed penalty, he was unable to create danger. His lack of confidence is detrimental to Real Madrid.”
