VfL Wolfsburg lost their seven-match unbeaten streak in the Bundesliga to an FC Augsburg team that are now ten matches undefeated following Phillip Tietz's fifty-third minute goal. Following the 0-1 defeat, Ralph Hasenhüttl and Maximilian Arnold addressed the media.
Hasenhüttl was first to speak, and stated regarding the result, “I think we saw the close match we expected, which was probably to be expected before kickoff - a small detail can decide a match like this. I think the bottom line was the same, we were not paying attention again.”
He added, “In the last match, we equalised at least. This time, we just did not have that chance; there was a header (from Wimmer) that went off the crossbar, and the one where Tiago (Tomás) slipped. We were able to put pressure for some time, but in the end, there was not enough we could get from there. We faced an opponent that was performing really well."
When asked what he thinks about the result and whether this affects Wolfsburg's possibility to qualify for Europe, the 57-year-old Austrian said, “We have eight matches left, and I was not overconfident enough to think that we would not lose another match until the end, so it is not that simple for us; we are disappointed, no question, but we also know how to put the match into perspective.”
“Unfortunately, there are not too many players available for our next match in two weeks, but I think it also hurts that Mohamed Amoura picked up his fifth yellow card, that hurts me even more than losing these three points today. Generally, you can see that the league is very close that one or two wins can make such a huge difference.”
Kamil Grabara spoke after returning to the pitch for the first time in a month and a half. Regarding the result, he said, “We knew what we were going to face, they run all over the pitch, one-on-one; I think we struggled to match the intensity in the first half, and unfortunately, our loan player (Cédric Zesiger) played a great ball."
“You know how it is sometimes, things happen and that is how it is in football, striker gets in one-on-one position and that is it.”
He also praised Augsburg following the result, adding, “It's no coincidence that they probably kept eight clean sheets in a row or something (it was seven), you can see the spirit they have and when you go 0-1 down, it is extremely difficult to get it on your side.”
He was also asked about the medical staff and his clearance to play, and said that “The timeline was a little bit longer; once I got diagnosed for my injury, I was not really hoping or thinking about going back before the international break. We thought it was going to be convenient to play after the international break, but I have to say that the medical department did a great job with me, everything went smooth, they gave absolutely all, and that made it easier.”
