Each new season brings along its own new and unique challenges for FC Barcelona to overcome. After all, football is all about adapting and learning to live with the toughest of situations. Fortunately, Barcelona have managed to deal with such hurdles this season rather well.

By doing so, the club has managed to strengthen their position across all major tournaments this season. From being first place in La Liga to being in the final of the Copa del Rey and among the final four teams in the UEFA Champions League, this is an impressive campaign for Hansi Flick’s side.

However, one crucial detail that often gets overlooked when talking about the positive things that a manager brings are the rotations and experimentations they do. For Hansi Flick, a lack of depth or adequate quality was certainly forcing him to overplay Jules Kounde this season, but he may have now figured out an alternative option for the right-back position thanks to his recent experiment.

As highlighted by MARCA, that new solution could just be 24-year-old defender Eric Garcia. In what was a rather surprising decision, Flick decided to field Garcia as his starting right-back in the recent La Liga game against RCD Mallorca at the Montjuic Stadium.

A position that he has never played in before, this was a complete wildcard decision from the German coach involving Eric Garcia. However, he managed to deliver a rather strong performance, dealing with both the offensive and defensive requirements of his role quite well.

Moreover, he even managed to provide the crucial assist that would give Barcelona their only goal of the game. While Dani Olmo’s individual brilliance was at the heart of that goal, it was also Garcia’s awareness and passing ability that helped out.

Interestingly, his presence also enabled a much more smooth transition from the backline to the front of the Barcelona attack thanks to his passing and distribution. This enabled the team to play a smooth brand of football that took advantage of having two mobile full-backs in both Garcia and Hector Fort.

Furthermore, this new role could allow Garcia to offer even more advantages to Barcelona thanks to his versatility. In many ways, he has now established himself as a useful asset to the team, and Hansi Flick is the man responsible for it as he was the one who convinced Garcia to stay at the club.
