Taking a look at how Hamza Choudhury's wages could cost Sheffield United if a January move comes to fruition
Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury has emerged as a potential transfer target for Sheffield United this January.
According to The Star, the midfielder is on the Blades’ radar this month, with Chris Wilder looking to bolster his side for the second half of the campaign.
The Yorkshire outfit have recently changed owners, giving them the chance to make a mark on the first team squad for the first time.
Choudhury was a regular presence in the Leicester side last season as they clinched promotion back to the Premier League.
However, the 27-year-old has only featured four times for the Foxes so far in the top flight this year, potentially opening the door for a January exit.
Here we use estimated figures from Capology to take a look at the player’s estimated weekly wage at Leicester ahead of a possible Sheffield United move…
Hamza Choudhury is currently receiving a weekly wage of £50,000 at Leicester, with his contract set to expire in the summer of 2027.
The midfielder signed his most recent deal in September 2023, with the club back competing in the Championship at that point.
He remained with the Foxes following their 2023 relegation from the top flight, and made 34 appearances in the second tier as Enzo Maresca’s side finished in first place.
Choudhury has been with the Leicestershire outfit since he was playing at underage level, having come through their academy system.
He is by no means the best paid player at the club, with the likes of Jamie Vardy earning £140,000 per week.
Harry Winks is the second highest earner at £90,000-a-week, with Boubakary Soumaré and Ricardo Pereira earning £80,000 per week.
Choudhury is one of three players at Leicester earning a weekly salary of £50,000, along with Wout Faes and Oliver Skipp, who have both been a more prominent presence in the first team this season.
Sheffield United’s highest paid permanent member of the squad is Rhian Brewster, who takes home £35,000 per week.
This is lower than Choudhury’s wage at Leicester, meaning talks over his salary could prove a big stumbling block to be overcome if a permanent deal is to be negotiated.
Given Leicester’s financial position, the Foxes may be keen to cash in and raise funds to balance their own books, but this gap in wages will need to be resolved somehow.
Perhaps Sheffield United would be willing to make Choudhury their best paid player in order to bring him to Bramall Lane, or he might be open to a pay cut in order to facilitate the move.
If neither option comes to pass, then it could prove a very tricky transfer to get over the line between now and 3 February.
Other high earners at Sheffield United include Gustavo Hamer, Vini Souza, Tom Davies and Anel Ahdmedhodzic, who are all on £30,000 per week.
