Sheffield United look set to lose their ace Gustavo Hamer this summer, but it is a move that the Bramall Lane faithful cannot be surprised by.

Hamer reportedly wants to move to the Premier League, after impressing in the most recent term with the Blades. It comes after he lit up the Sky Bet Championship in a season where he almost helped lead the Steel City club back to the promised land.

United would have been promoted into the top-flight themselves had they beaten Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium, but now it appears Hamer will make the move without them.

Gus Hamer has been a star for Sheffield United

Hamer shone in the 2024/25 campaign for the Blades, scoring ten times and assisting eight further goals in the regular season and play-offs. It was a return that saw him secure the Player of the Season accolade, building on an impressive showing the season before.

While United were soundly relegated in a dismal display for the Chris Wilder-managed team in the 2023/24 Premier League term, Hamer stood out as a rose among thorns. He provided 11 goal involvements, including four goals, in the top-flight season and proved his mettle against some of the world's best.

The Brazilian-born Dutchman was a level above his well-drilled teammates in both of the past two seasons, so it is no surprise that he has attracted interest after the red and white side of Sheffield missed out on promotion as a team.

After originally moving in a deal reportedly worth £15m from Coventry City back in 2023, Hamer became United's chief creative force, running the midfield and providing the spark needed to launch attacks.

There is no doubting he is worthy of a return to the Premier League, after being the Championship's top performer and before that standing out in a poor side in that very division.

Sheffield United fans must understand Gus Hamer's Premier League decision

It has been reported that Leeds United, who won the Championship with 100 points on the board last season, are keen on signing Hamer. He has been linked to the club in recent reports, and was last year, too, with the 28-year-old's Premier League aspirations only helping to fuel the fire that he may swap South Yorkshire for West Yorkshire this summer.

Daniel Farke's side are not the only team linked to a move for Hamer, with Dutch outfit PSV Eindhoven also rumoured to be interested in the former Netherlands youth international. He is said to be interested in a move to the Dutch top-flight, even while his Premier League ambitions remain strong.

Blades' fans should not begrudge Hamer for wanting to try his hand back in the Premier League as he hits the peak years of his career. No supporter ever wants to see their club lose a top performer, but in the situation that United find themselves in, the solution of allowing an exit is a sensible one and the best for all sides.

That is not only Hamer himself, who will benefit from the change to play in the top-flight once again, but the Blades as well. The now Ruben Selles-led team will likely be able to secure a profit on their original investment, which will ease the transition in recruiting a replacement for their star man.

It is no surprise that the player noted as the Championship's best wishes to play at a higher level, and no one can knock him for that. He would be a big loss for the Blades, but whoever convinces him to sign on the dotted line would be securing themselves a Premier League-ready playmaker.
