Milan Futuro’s recent resurgence was brought to a halt as they lost 3-2 away from home in the league against Gubbio on Wednesday afternoon.
After victories against Campobasso, Sestri Levante and Ternana in the past three rounds, confidence was at an all-time high (though that isn’t saying much) and some daylight had opened up from the direct relegation spot.
A trip to face mid-table Gubbio felt like another chance to prove that the team were taking big strides under Massimo Oddi, though when Tommasini was put through on goal and slotted past Lapo Nava after just seven minutes it set the tone for the evening.
In the 22nd minute Milan did draw level when Ianesi drew a penalty following a cross from Fall that he beat the defender to, and Francesco Camarda slotted the spot kick home calmly.
Just eight minutes later the hosts were ahead again though, and it came via a confused mess following a corner that wasn’t cleared. Eventually the ball ricocheted in off Andrei Coubis, so it will go down as an own-goal.
Five minutes after the restart, Gubbio got a very easy third goal to effectively kill the game. A cross from the right met the head of Di Massimo who was totally alone, making it 3-1.
With just over 10 minutes left, the Futuro got another chance from the penalty spot after a clumsy challenge inside the box. This time Camarda went the other way, with the same outcome: a goal.
The defeat means that the Futuro remain 17th in the table, and that a relegation play-off place is mathematically confirmed. All that is to play for now is to try and finish above SPAL, to secure home advantage.
