Vincent Euvrard had only three big days to prepare for his first match on the Standard's bench in Leuven. Leuven, a club where he met his new assistants José Jeunechamps and Gunter Vandebroeck, but also Thomas Henry, who is back after his suspension.
What system will the new coach of the Red Devils put in place? Standard played in a three-defender system last season under Ivan Leko, then switched to four under Mircea Rednic. But Vincent Euvrard, since the beginning of his career, generally favors a 3-4-1-2 formation.
Euvrard has definitely maintained the suspense. He was not presented to the press this week and will be after his first match on the bench. This allows him to work in a short period of time, but also to keep the new setup and the generally triggered shockwave from a coaching change secret.
This three-defender system could suit the current squad of Standard, as it would offer more freedom to Marlon Fossey, sometimes struggling in the defensive phase, strengthen the space in front of the defense, and allow for two strikers up front. Taking into account injuries to David Bates, Timothée Nkada, and Dennis Ayensa, here is what the Standard team in Leuven could look like.
Matthieu Epolo would of course take his place in goal, and if a three-central defender system is chosen, Daan Dierckx could retain his place alongside Ibe Hautekiet and Josué Homawoo. On the sides, a more offensive profile is generally favored on one side and a more defensive one on the other.
Tobias Mohr is capable of covering the entire left flank and even finished the match as a full-back against Cercle, while Marlon Fossey still seems to be the best option on the right despite his inconsistent performances. This wing-back role could allow him to shed some defensive tasks, better covered behind him, and push forward more.
As a substitute, unless he surprises Vincent Euvrard, Henry Lawrence could play on one side of the central defense and replace Marlon Fossey in case of need. Boli Bolingoli has already played in this role on the left during his career, but currently seems to have fewer cards to play than Tobias Mohr if positions tighten. The same goes for Alexandro Calut.
In midfield, the duo of Marco Ilaimaharitra and Casper Nielsen still seems to be preferred, but Mircea Rednic said he was "disappointed with his experienced players" after the match against Cercle. It remains to be seen if Vincent Euvrard, who has undoubtedly reviewed the game since then, shares the same opinion and if he intends to make adjustments.
Hakim Sahabo is a young talent but makes too many individual errors, Léandre Kuavita has been sidelined by Rednic, and Ibrahim Karamoko was seen more as a central defender by the Romanian. Again, we wait to hear what Euvrard will say about this.
The number 10 position can be quite varied. Mohamed El Hankouri came on against Cercle but is not yet fit, as Rednic said. Nayel Mehssatou, who can also play a bit deeper, could strengthen the midfield, while Adnane Abid would energize and bring creativity.
Up front, we would find Thomas Henry and normally Timothée Nkada or Dennis Ayensa, currently injured. Rafki Saïd could be tested in this role again, but this time with considerable support. The Comorian would then be considered the fourth striker and would push René Mitongo and the other youth players down the hierarchy, where it will be difficult to assign him another role in this system, unless he surprises with certain defensive qualities.
The probable composition of Standard in Leuven: Epolo - Dierckx, Hautekiet, Homawoo - Mohr, Ilaimaharitra, Nielsen, Fossey - Abid - Henry, Saïd
