The South Yorkshire outfit staged a dramatic close to the season, hitting form at exactly the right time to not only secure promotion with victory over Bradford City, but clinch the title with a final day triumph over Notts County seven days later.

Grant McCann's relentless drive to succeed

You would have forgiven McCann for taking some time off after pushing Rovers to the league title, re-building the squad and going a couple of steps better than the play-off semi-final defeat they managed 12 months prior.

However, that is not the sort of man the ex-Peterborough United manager is. And, with his relentless drive and continual work ethic, he has the potential to help Rovers shock League One on their return to the division.

Doncaster are currently away in Spain, enjoying a warm-weather training camp before their flurry of pre-season games paves the way for the campaign to begin in earnest on August, 2.

And while Rovers are out of the country, the Yorkshire Post have released an interview journalist Leon Wobschall did with McCann.

He spoke about the things you do not often here a football manager speak about, not focusing on tactics or results, but instead family-life, long hours traveling, and his drive to succeed.

One particular anecdote stood out, as McCann recalled the days that followed the promotion-sealing victory over the Bantams.

"We are in a staff group chat and they were putting pictures in on the Monday of the celebrations (after Bradford) and stuff like that and I sent a picture straight back of me drinking a coffee in Costa and watching Notts County’s last three games," he said.

That illustrates perfectly the drive McCann has to always look ahead, never over-celebrating or dwelling on the past, but directing his energy forwards instead.

He added: "It’s just the way I have always worked and I want to always go onto ‘the next one’."

It stands Doncaster Rovers in good stead for League One return

It has been a busy summer for Doncaster already, with near double-digits of players through the door before the calendar had even flipped to July.

Matty Pearson, the centre-back leaving Huddersfield Town, is one signing that has caught the eye, while the recruitment of Tottenham Hotspur youngster Damola Ajayi, Leeds United academy product Robbie Gotts, and Crystal Palace defender Sean Grehan have all bolstered the Rovers ranks.

Not just in the transfer window, but in his entire demeanor of always looking ahead and seeking the next blotch of success, McCann can lay the foundations for Doncaster to excel in their new surroundings.

Conventional wisdom says they will be nearer the bottom end of the third tier, having just come into a division which packs a heavy punch. And, while few are expecting relegation for McCann's men, few are tipping them to battle up towards mid-table and perhaps even higher.
