Manchester City’s potential options to replace Ederson, should the Brazilian leave the club this summer, have been reduced following a decision from one of their targets.
As City continue preparations for life beyond the 2024/25 campaign, one area of ongoing uncertainty surrounds the club’s goalkeeping department — where long-serving number one Ederson is yet to finalise his future plans amid external interest.
In anticipation of a possible departure, City have been actively compiling a shortlist of goalkeeping targets from across Europe, ranging from elite-level international performers to emerging domestic stars.
While Diogo Costa of FC Porto has been widely reported as the leading contender for the Premier League giants, several names — particularly from Serie A — have also featured prominently in scouting assessments.
At the same time, other clubs have been moving to secure their own long-term goalkeeping options, including Juventus – who have made their own high-profile investment in the position and are keen to retain what they view as a pillar of their defensive future.
That stance has now had a direct impact on Manchester City’s search, with one of their identified candidates seemingly shutting down the possibility of a Premier League switch altogether.
According to the information of Italian newspaper Tuttosport, as translated and relayed by Football Italia, Juventus’ Michele Di Gregorio has no interest in joining City having been placed on the Premier League giants’ shortlist of potential Ederson replacements.
Di Gregorio is said to only be interested in playing for Juventus and is also keen to commit his long-term future to the Bianconeri, while some City fans will now be anxiously awaiting further clarity around Ederson’s future.
This development leaves City to further narrow their list of viable options, with Diogo Costa remaining the most prominent name linked to the Etihad Stadium. As previously reported, the Portugal international has emerged as the standout target in recent weeks, with internal discussions continuing among City’s recruitment team.
Meanwhile, Ederson’s future remains unresolved as he heads into his final contracted season. Galatasaray and a Saudi Pro League side have shown interest in the Brazilian — with one report claiming an offer worth €25 million per season has been proposed to the player.
While Manchester City would be open to a sale under the right conditions, there is still no definitive clarity as to whether Ederson himself is ready to walk away from a nine-season stay in the North-West of England.
