Girona kept their LaLiga title bid on track by snatching the spoils from a seven-goal thriller with Atlético de Madrid.
Scorers: Fernández 2′, Sávio 26′, Blind 39′, Martín 90+1′; Morata 14′, 44′, 53′
Valery Fernández handed the hosts a quickfire start by curling home from the edge of the area inside the opening two minutes at the Estadi Montilivi.
They were soon pulled level as Álvaro Morata combined with Antoine Griezmann to produce a shot on the turn that had the beating of Paulo Gazzaniga.
Sávio restored the lead for Míchel’s side with downward volley past Jan Oblak, who had parried Iván Martín’s initial effort after he dispossessed Koke.
Things went from bad to worse for their visitors as Daley Blind put the Blanquivermells further ahead by turning home Artem Dovbyk’s cross at the far post.
But Atleti struck back shortly before half time with Morata notching his second of the evening by skipping clear of the hosts’ defence and slotting home.
The Spain international thought he had levelled deep in first-half added time but his potential hat-trick was chalked off by VAR for an offside in the build-up.
He would later claim the match ball shortly after the interval with another trademark finish to even up matters before Oblak denied Dovbyk with a strong stop.
However Girona’s persistence paid off as Martín produced a stunning hooked finish in the first minute of added time to complete a memorable victory.
The result sees the Catalans stay level on points with Real Madrid at the summit while Atleti are 10 points adrift of their city rivals.
