Having left the club to join Monza this summer, Daniel Maldini is no longer a part of AC Milan. However, the Maldini name will always be synonymous with the Rossoneri and as such, it’s great news to see him in the national team.

As highlighted by today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below), the call-up is truly something special. The Maldini dynasty in the national team started with the defender Cesare Maldini, who made 14 appearances and then coached the team for 20 games in the late 90s.

The story continued with Cesare’s son Paolo, the most complete defender of them all, who made 126 appearances and scored seven goals for the team. And now the attacking midfielder Daniel, the son of Paolo and grandson of Cesare, will establish the dynasty in the national team.

Having said that, Daniel hasn’t just been called up because of his family. Luciano Spalletti had been thinking about the call-up for a long time and after the success with Monza, it was a no-brainer for the manager to include the 22-year-old.

Milan might end up regretting letting him go for free in the summer, inserting a 50% resale clause instead of demanding a fee from Monza. Perhaps he could even come back to the club in the future, given said clause.
