GdS: Fonseca shifts focus to Abraham and Leao as composure is needed

AC Milan failed to score in a game for the first time this season as they lost 1-0 against Bayer Leverkusen earlier this week. As highlighted by a report, Paulo Fonseca is keen on getting Tammy Abraham and Rafael Leao going goalscoring-wise.

While the Rossoneri have done well to create chances this season, they haven’t always been that clinical. But little can be said about Christian Pulisic (five goals) and Alvaro Morata (two goals in 189 minutes), as highlighted by Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below), instead two others must step up.

Of course, we are talking about Tammy Abraham and Rafael Leao. Both have scored a goal each but given their quality, more can definitely be expected from them. As such, Fonseca is hoping for them to get going against Fiorentina tomorrow evening.

Abraham must improve finishing

There is no doubt that Abraham has brought an energy to Milan’s attack that was missing. With his willingness, sacrifice and dirty work, he has given the team a boost when it was most needed. However, his first goal from open play is still missing.

It’s not like he hasn’t had chances either, including the 1v1s against Inter and Lecce, so he must show that the finishing is better than what we have seen so far. Then again, having recently recovered from a serious injury, he needs time to gain confidence in front of goal.

As the Englishman has stated himself, it would be a bigger problem if he didn’t have any chances at all. Tomorrow night, he will play from the first minute and Milan are hoping that he can hit the ground running.

A new Leao yet to shine

As for Leao, he found the back of the net against Lazio and thus has a goal from open play, but Milan know that he can be a lot more prolific. Against Fiorentina, back in 2019, he scored his first goal for the Rossoneri and perhaps this can be a spark for tomorrow’s clash.

He also scored a decisive goal against Fiorentina in the Scudetto season, with a clever shot at the near post, and made his 200th appearance for Milan last season against La Viola. Of course, he scored in that game too and it was the winner.

Today, however, Fonseca wants to shape a new version of Leao. One that is less tied to receptions on the left and solo runs, but more involved in team play – both in possession and in defence – and more confident in cutting towards the centre.

In the penalty box, there is still some work to be done as the winger has just one goal in 621 minutes, even if the attempts towards goal have gone up statistically. Precision is thus needed, which is something he has been lacking all his career.

The question is if he can bounce back and show Fonseca that he can live up to the new duties. Fiorentina certainly seems to bring him luck, so maybe he can shine for the Rossoneri tomorrow. In five games against La Viola, he has four goals and only one scoreless game.
