Kobbie Mainoo got an opportunity to prove himself after Gareth Southgate figured out that Conor Gallagher was not the midfield anecdote for his beloved Kalvin Philips.

It was a tough assignment for Mainoo to lift England’s performance. The Three Lions topped Group C but they’ve performed poorly after winning one match and drawing two.

We weren’t surprised to see Mainoo do a better job in midfield than Gallagher – and Trent Alexander-Arnold before him, which will raise questions over whether the Manchester United starlet should start in England’s last-16 clash.

Mainoo was England’s best player in the second half. The tempo increased when he came on. The Three Lions passed the ball quicker and looked comfortable in possession, but they couldn’t find a way in behind the Slovenia back line.

The 19-year-old produced a backheel in injury time, giving England fans a glimpse of what he can do.

Southgate brought on Cole Palmer towards the end and the Chelsea forward is another player who should be starting in this underwhelming England side.

However, Mainoo completed 97% of his passes during his 45 minute cameo.

Mainoo to start for England

Gary Neville told ITV he is adamant Mainoo should be starting the next game.

He said: “I am certain Mainoo will start in the next game. He thought Gallagher may be the option, obviously for the energy we talked about before the game, but I think it was quite obvious that we needed someone in there who would get us playing, and Mainoo does that. I think Wharton is capable of that as well.”

Roy Keane was in agreement as he responded: “I think we should all be surprised if Mainoo doesn’t start the next game.”
