Manchester City could be subject to another major exit from their midfield ranks this summer following on from the departure of Kevin De Bruyne on a free transfer.
Talk around possible departures from Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City squad come off the back of a quartet of arrivals in time for the FIFA Club World Cup, as Hugo Viana worked intensely to box off the majority of the summer business.
Bolstering the full-back ranks was Wolves’ Rayan Ait-Nouri, with Rayan Cherki adding much-needed flair and creative vision to the advanced roles, while Marcus Bettinelli replaced Scott Carson as the third-choice goalkeeper in the unit.
But deeper in midfielder, and offering talent as a box-to-box ‘number 8′, came Tijjani Reijnders from AC Milan in a deal that established the Dutchman as the Italian giants’ record sale out of the San Siro.
The arrival of the 26-year-old midfielder has naturally raised doubts over the futures of existing midfielders at Manchester City, with question marks lingering prior to Reijnders’ arrival concerning the likes of Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan.
And it is the latter that has now been tied to interest from Turkey, just hours after he and his Manchester City teammates touched down in Florida ahead of the start of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this summer.
According to the information of Turkish sports reporter Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, Galatasaray are trying to complete a transfer of İlkay Gündoğan from Manchester City, with the player himself also keen on the move.
However, it is claimed that the Turkish giants are not alone in their interest, with an official offer having already been submitted to the midfielder by those in Saudi Arabia, despite Galatasaray being ‘one step ahead’ in the chase.
The former Germany international only returned to Manchester City last summer on a free transfer from FC Barcelona, after the Spanish club were unable to retain the veteran midfielder’s services due to ongoing financial struggles.
As such, Pep Guardiola and City’s key decision makers moved swiftly to bring a truly legendary servant of the club back to the Etihad Stadium, penning a 12-month agreement with an automatically triggered extension by a further year depending on appearances last season.
Following a host of injury and fitness problems hampering the squad, Gundogan became an integral component of Guardiola’s line-ups perhaps surprisingly, amassing 50 appearances across competitions and extending his deal with the club until the summer of 2026.
