The Brazilian has formed an excellent understanding with William Saliba, helping Arsenal to the Premier League’s best defensive record in each of the last three campaigns.

He has made 210 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions, scoring 20 times, and has put pen to paper on a four-year contract.

Discussing his new deal, the 27-year-old said his ‘love’ for Arsenal was a major factor in extending his stay at the Emirates. After the club’s recent progress under Mikel Arteta, he outlined his ambition to help Arsenal to major silverware in the coming campaigns.

“I arrived here as a young player and after almost five years I’m so happy and I’ve learned a lot,” he told the club’s official website.

“I’m so proud of myself, it’s an amazing journey, and I’m so happy to continue it. I hope I win some trophies with this club, because I love this club and my family loves the club, too.

“Arsenal is an amazing club and I’m so proud to sign a new contract. I love this club, I love the supporters, my teammates, I love this stadium. I’m so proud and thank you for all the support. We continue together for the future.”
