This summer was packed with twists and turns for the "Soustara" faithful. The club was on the verge of securing the services of Senegalese coach Aliou Cissé, the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations champion, before an unexpected turn of events ultimately paved the way for Algerian Abdelhak Benchikha's return.
According to sources within the club, cited by Algerian outlet Ennahar, talks with the former Lions of Teranga manager had reached an advanced stage. However, his monthly salary, reportedly set at €40,000, proved to be a stumbling block for the club's management. This figure was considered excessive given the club’s current budget and ambitions, ultimately causing negotiations to break down. The same sources indicate that Benchikha’s departure two seasons ago was not related to sporting reasons, but rather disagreements with the previous board. This time, "the General" agreed to return on a reduced salary and under more flexible terms. His deep knowledge of the club and its environment tipped the scales in his favor. To recall, Abdelhak Benchikha had already led USM Alger for one season, succeeding interim coach Mohamed Lacet.
