Nathan Jones guided Charlton Athletic to promotion to the Championship this season
Nathan Jones is still under consideration for the Cardiff City managerial vacancy following his play-off success with Charlton Athletic.
According to Wales Online, it’s likely that the 52-year-old has been named as a potential candidate to replace Omer Riza by the board as owner Vincent Tan looks to find a new manager for next season.
Riza was dismissed by the Bluebirds in April, with the club suffering relegation to League One after a disappointing season.
Meanwhile, Jones is now preparing his Addicks side for life in the Championship after they won promotion through the play-offs.
Cardiff have reportedly mentioned Jones as a possible option to replace Riza as the permanent manager.
It is understood that an internal deadline of the end of May was set for an appointment, with time running out on that being hit.
However, it’s believed the board have given a recommendation to Tan, which was made over a week ago.
Other names also included on their shortlist are Rob Edwards, Ian Evatt, Des Buckingham, Brian Barry-Murphy, Aaron Ramsey and Ruben Selles, lthough it remains unclear just who will be chosen to take the team forward as they prepare for life in League One.
It has been claimed that Tan’s preference is to hire someone with experience in English football, but that it isn’t necessarily a deal-breaker if the coach is only up-and-coming.
Jones, of course, possesses plenty of experience and has twice gained promotion from League One, which will be the objective for Cardiff next season after suffering relegation in 24/25.
Charlton earned a fourth place finish in League One under Jones this season, leading them to the play-offs.
The Addicks beat Leyton Orient at Wembley Stadium earlier this month to clinch a place in the Championship.
The London outfit are returning to the second tier for the first time since 2019, with Jones achieving success in his first full campaign in charge at the Valley.
But the opportunity to manage Cardiff could be appealing, despite their relegation, with the manager previously stating he would love to work with his hometown club.
Jones has done a great job turning things around for Charlton and guiding them to the Championship.
If he were to leave, then a move to Cardiff would be the likeliest route to that exit, so supporters will be concerned about these latest developments.
That they gained promotion might help the Addicks in convincing Jones to stay, as he now has the opportunity to work at a higher level again, whereas the Bluebirds are heading for League One.
