Marcus Thuram is ready to reduce Inter Milan’s “dependence” on captain Lautaro Martinez for goals with more of a penalty area presence.

This is the view in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews.

It is certainly not like Martinez was the only Inter player to score goals last season.

The Nerazzurri had the most prolific attack in Serie A last campaign. And a big part of the reason why was that they could get goals from all over the pitch.

But unlike the wingbacks or midfielders, for example, Martinez did not just score here and there.

The Inter captain was relentless. As he has done season on season, Martinez refined his penalty area presence.

With the Argentine on the pitch, Inter could always look to his threat near the opposition goal.

Marcus Thuram Looks To Lessen Inter’s “Lautaro Dependence”

French international Thuram was somewhere between Martinez and the other Inter players last season in terms of goalscoring.

The former Borussia Monchengladbach striker found the back of the net thirteen times, compared to Martinez’s 24.

That was hardly a bad return.

And moreover, Thuram assisted goals far more prolifically than Martinez. And the numbers do not tell the full story of his contribution to Inter’s attack by any means.

But just in terms of a goal threat, Thuram was not altogether lethal last season.

This meant that Inter really only had Martinez as a player who threatened the opposition penalty area week in and week out.

Thuram’s start to this season suggests that that could change, however.

The 27-year-old scored twice in Inter’s first match of the season away to Genoa.

Moreover, they were real striker’s goals from Thuram.

The Frenchman’s instincts, positioning, and the timing and technique of his header for Inter’s first suggests that he can help the Nerazzurri make the most of crosses as a weapon.

And then Thuram ran right on the edge of the Genoa defensive line for Inter’s second.

The promise is that Thuram could easily push for twenty league goals this season.

Add to that the fact that Inter have signed another striker with a very prolific record in the form of Mehdi Taremi, and they look less like a team who need Martinez to finish off their attacks.
