FPL 2024/25 tips: The best midfielders to sign

We’re just a few weeks away from the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season and it’s a crucial time for managers.

That’s FPL managers we’re talking about. Many will have drafted and re-drafted their teams since FPL opened earlier in July. Whether that’s due to minds changing or transfers, there’s still time for more alterations.

Your midfield may be the most important part of your FPL squad. If you get the right mix, you could take control of the mini leagues.

You want to keep an eye on the wingers — or even those playing in a false nine role — that are classed as midfielders in-game. But avoid those who do play more defensively, not really racking up the points.

So we’ve put together our best picks for you to consider.

Cole Palmer

  • Club: Chelsea
  • Price: £10.5m
  • 2023/24 points: 244

Cole Palmer is no longer a cheap option, with his starting price jumping up to £10.5m. That’s a jump of £5.5m from his starting price for 2023/24. It was to be expected too, with Palmer picking up more points than any other FPL player last season. And, despite the jump in price, Palmer is a player you’ll want in your squad.

The Chelsea man was directly involved in more goals than any other Premier League player last season with 22 goals and 11 assists. FPL-wise there were another two assists, with a total Expected Assists tally of 8.17. And, let’s not forget, he’s Chelsea perfect penalty taker.

Anthony Gordon

Anthony Gordon and Jarrod Bowen are both available for the same price this year, and there was just one point between them in 2023/24 FPL. Gordon took the win, and we’re backing him to be the choice this year — if you had to pick between the two. When you look at cost per points last season, Gordon came out on top. He started with a price of £5.5m and ended the season at £6.4m — £1.2m cheaper than Bowen.

So, he had better value than Bowen. Gordon was also directly involved in 27 goals in FPL, scoring 11 alongside his 16 fantasy assists. He had an xG of 10.03 and an xA of 5.40, and averaged 2.52 shots per 90 minutes. He’s a danger and only looks set to improve, still just 23.

Abdul Fatawu

  • Club: Leicester
  • Price: £5.5m
  • 2023/24 points: N/A

A newly-promoted player, Adbul Fatawu is one to keep an eye on. The 20-year-old played 40 of Leicester’s 46 games in the Championship last season, amassing 2,826 minutes with 33 starts and seven substitute appearances. Since his signing, the only two games he missed were due to suspension for a red card against Coventry.

On loan from Sporting CP — a move that was recently made permanent — Fatawu scored six goals and provided 13 assists in the Championship. He created 32 big chances, the most in the Championship, and had an xA of 10.75.
