Tottenham in Wissa Frame as Transfer Dominoes Line Up

Tottenham angle emerges in Brentford’s striker puzzle

TalkSport report that Yoane Wissa, scorer of 19 goals and four assists in the 2024/25 campaign, is actively pushing to leave Brentford. Despite interest from Newcastle and Nottingham Forest, it is Tottenham Hotspur who have emerged as the forward’s preferred destination. The Congolese international’s form under Thomas Frank has been the catalyst, and with Spurs now led by Frank, the personal dynamic may hold sway over pure financials.

“Wissa is pushing to leave Brentford but his preferred option would be to join Thomas Frank at Tottenham,” TalkSport confirm. The price tag? A commanding £50 million. That would eclipse Brentford’s current record sale of £40 million for Ivan Toney to Al Ahli.

Tottenham, who have already added Mohammed Kudus and Mathys Tel to their frontline, are seemingly not done. Wissa’s potential arrival would make him the sixth signing of the summer. For a club traditionally reserved in the market, the scale of spending suggests a recalibration of ambition under Thomas Frank and the new sporting structure.

Transfer complications from United and Liverpool

This transfer narrative is not taking place in a vacuum. Liverpool have reportedly made a formal bid for Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitike, with personal terms already agreed. That development has forced Newcastle to pivot towards Wissa, as their hopes of landing Ekitike fade.

However, Brentford’s willingness to negotiate could hinge on another key domino: Manchester United’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo. As per TalkSport, “Brentford’s willingness to part ways with Wissa could hinge on whether Manchester United seal the signing of Bryan Mbeumo.”

Newcastle’s contingency move raises pressure

Newcastle, already dealing with speculation around Alexander Isak’s future, are treading carefully. Liverpool’s rumoured willingness to offer £120 million for Isak means Newcastle must weigh up both retention and recruitment.

“If Eddie Howe is able to hold on to Isak and get his hands on Wissa, the Tyneside club would be adding major firepower,” TalkSport suggest. The Magpies’ attacking numbers already rank amongst the league’s best, but their transfer manoeuvres this summer could determine whether they push for Champions League spots or fall into the crowd.

Forest’s bid reflects Wissa’s rising stock

Nottingham Forest’s interest in Wissa has not gone away. Their rejected January bid of £25 million has since been followed up by another failed attempt. Brentford’s valuation has nearly doubled in that time, a sign of the Congolese striker’s stock soaring during his prolific campaign.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

There’s a strong whiff of déjà vu about this report, and not the comforting kind. Spurs fans, particularly those accustomed to the club’s laboured transfer dealings, may feel uneasy at the prospect of yet another ambitious summer window without guaranteed rewards. Wissa, for all his goals, is 28, coming at a premium price of £50 million, and would arrive as part of an already crowded attack.

Yes, he worked well under Frank. But will that chemistry transfer to a Spurs side trying to balance youth, European football and reshuffling their entire forward dynamic? Kudus, Tel, Gibbs-White and now Wissa? It feels ambitious, but scattergun.

Moreover, if Tottenham are so confident in Wissa, why has it taken Forest and Newcastle to test the waters first? Forest’s offer was instantly rejected, Newcastle are sniffing around, and yet the player wants Spurs. It all looks reactive rather than proactive.

This has all the hallmarks of Spurs walking into another overvalued deal. Brentford know they can name their price. £50 million would break their outgoing transfer record and could very well leave Spurs with a forward surplus and a defensive deficit.

In short, this feels more like a statement signing than a smart one. Tottenham need clarity, not congestion.
