Former Manchester United striker Andy Cole isn’t convinced about the club’s transfer target Matthijs de Ligt.

The Netherlands international has emerged as United’s primary defensive target after having a bid turned down by Everton for Jarrad Branthwaite.

There are question marks over why he hasn’t been able to settle at Bayern Munich after previously flopping at Juventus, but De Ligt played his best football under Erik ten Hag at Ajax when he looked like a potential world-beater at the age of 18.

At 24, the Dutch defender could be on the move again after telling his agent to prioritise a move to Old Trafford this summer.

Speaking to Betfred, De Ligt said (via Manchester Evening News): “I like him but the thing I don’t understand about him is why is he always moving? That’s what I don’t get. He did three years at Juventus and about two years at Bayern, so what I’m now thinking is if he is such a good player, why would the club want to sell him? I think he’s a good player, but you’ve got to start questioning why everyone keeps selling him. He’s only 24-years-old, so I’d like to think that his best years are still in front of him, so it’s an interesting one. I wouldn’t say that Bayern Munich needs the money, but let’s see if it happens.”

De Ligt, as a ball-playing centre-back, struggled to adapt at Juventus – but it may be telling that Bayern are now willing to cash in on the player.

Only time will tell if he joins United and whether Ten Hag can get the best out of him again.
