Lukas Podolski, a fan favourite with Arsenal supporters, has found himself in a bit of trouble following his farewell game at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion on 10 October.

The 39-year-old former Germany international, who played for the Gunners from 2012 to 2015, celebrated the end of an illustrious career in Cologne, but his post-match celebrations have landed him in hot water with local authorities.

Following an emotional farewell match featuring friends, former teammates, and other football legends, Podolski took to the stands to thank the supporters of 1. FC Köln, his boyhood club.

While among fans, he held a lit flare, a move that was broadcast live on television and shared across social media.

Unfortunately, this has led to an investigation by Cologne authorities.

According to the Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger, the city police are investigating Podolski, who could face a fine for holding the flare, an act that is prohibited under German stadium regulations.

The former striker has not yet been questioned by police, but the city is expected to issue a formal hearing form to him regarding the incident.

The flare was handed to Podolski by ultra supporters of 1. FC Köln in the south curve of the stadium. Though a common sight among fan groups, the use of pyrotechnics in stadiums is typically prosecuted as an administrative offence.

While the specific amount of the fine Podolski faces is still unclear, similar cases have seen penalties ranging from €300 to €1,500.

It appears Podolski will be spared from further legal repercussions beyond a possible fine.

Since there is no evidence that anyone was endangered or harmed by his actions, the authorities have ruled out pursuing charges under the Explosives Act, which could have led to more severe penalties, including imprisonment.

As a result, Podolski will avoid facing further fines or a custodial sentence of up to three years.

The German Football Association (DFB) often imposes fines on professional clubs for the use of items like flares and firecrackers during matches. In such instances, penalties can amount to €1,000 per item for top-flight Bundesliga teams.

However, the farewell event was not organised by the DFB, the German Football League (DFL), or even 1. FC Köln. Instead, it was managed by an independent event agency. Whether this agency will also be fined is currently unclear.

The police investigation into other individuals who used pyrotechnics during the event remains ongoing, with some still unidentified as authorities continue to analyse video surveillance. Podolski, for his part, has opted not to comment until he receives formal notification from the city regarding the hearing and any potential fine.

During his time with Arsenal, Lukas Podolski scored 31 goals in 82 appearances across all competitions, earning the admiration of fans for his powerful left foot and infectious enthusiasm.
