Former Barcelona sporting director Ramon Planes, now working at Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, shared his views on Barcelona’s current situation.

When asked about how he sees the Blaugrana under Hansi Flick, he stated, “I see Barça building a very exciting project. They have players who can bring a lot of joy to the fans.

“I believe the next season will be key to proving that Barça is entering a good period. It will be a beautiful and competitive league,” he told Mundo Deportivo.

The signing of Joan Garcia

The signing of Joan Garcia by Barça has caused a lot of discussion among Espanyol fans. Planes said he understands why some supporters are upset.

“My oldest son is an Espanyol fan, and he’s very angry. I get it because football is all about emotions,” he admitted.

But he also defended Joan’s choice: “He’s a goalkeeper with huge potential and a great future. Players have short careers and have to make tough decisions.

“Joan gave a lot to Espanyol, and while fans’ anger is normal, we should respect both sides.”

Ideal signings for Barcelona

With Barça looking for a left-footed winger after missing out on Nico Williams, Planes was asked about potential signings like Luis Diaz and Marcus Rashford.

He said, “Next season will be tough with many matches, and squad depth is crucial.

“There aren’t many players on the market who can improve the current team. But the players you mentioned are top quality. Any of them could do very well wearing the Barça shirt.”

Protect Lamine Yamal

Talking about Lamine Yamal, Planes praised the young talent but urged caution. “Lamine’s rise has been amazing. He looked special even in Barça’s youth teams.

“He has incredible potential, but the hardest part is staying at the top level. We must protect him and avoid putting too much pressure on him.

“If he keeps this up for years, he could become a Ballon d’Or winner. But it’s still early days, and we need to be patient.”

Planes also revealed he noticed Hansi Flick’s qualities even before he joined Barça. “I remember watching a Manchester City-Tottenham game at the Etihad, and Flick was sitting right next to me. He came across as a kind and approachable person,” he recalled.

“Barça players and staff tell me he’s demanding but easy to talk to. He’s done a great job in his first season. Now the real challenge is to keep improving.”
