As Manchester City have stumbled their way into a seven-game winless run the knives have come out. Rival fans have rejoiced at the sight of Pep Guardiola’s side slipping from their usual high standards. A common theme across City’s reign of dominance has been the notion that no one cares about Manchester City. But as you look at the coverage of City’s recent slide you can tell that that statement couldn’t be further from the truth.
Now we have articles from Manchester City’s rival fansites dedicated to City’s winless run. This one from Anfield Watch does stand out. As Liverpool sit top of the Premier League and have impressed this season, the writer has chosen to focus on Manchester City’s supposed head loss. That is amusing as the fact that the article is written flies in the face of the idea that no one cares about little old Manchester City.
But the fact is that Manchester City’s rivals do care about the world champions. They always have. It’s just that they don’t like to admit it. It’s easier to say that they don’t care about City rather than contemplate the reality they have lived with for the past seven seasons. It is easier to pretend that they don’t care about Manchester City rather than acknowledge that they wish their club had been as successful as City over the past seven seasons.
But this was always coming. There was always going to come a day when Pep Guardiola’s side’s era of dominance ended. That’s the nature of football. Nothing lasts forever. But if City’s losing run continues City’s rivals fans will pretend not to care about Manchester City while rejoicing at the sight of it occuring. That is an amusing sight to behold in amongst the reality of the situation Manchester City are facing.
