Fonseca admits ‘greatness of Milan’ left a mark on his after arrival | OneFootball

AC Milan head coach Paulo Fonseca spoke at tonight’s ‘125 years of Milan’ exhibition, and revealed his pride at being the head coach.

Fonseca has been in charge of Milan since the start of the 2024-25 season and he has already got a couple of historic wins under his belt: the 2-1 derby victory over Inter and the 3-1 win away against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Of course there is a long way to go before the Rossoneri can be considered among the elite sides in Europe, especially given their inconsistency this season. There are a lot of games to go though, so the fortunes can still be turned around.

Fonseca spoke on stage alongside president Paolo Scaroni and explained what it means to him to be the manager of a club with such a rich history.

“Milan are a universal club. When I arrived here it was easy to understand the greatness of Milan. Maybe for the fans who are here in Italy it is difficult to understand the greatness, but I am Portuguese, I have worked in Ukraine and France and the size of Milan is impressive,” he said.

“There are many many Milan fans also in Ukraine, Portugal, in many countries. Sometimes we do not know the true greatness of Milan.”

Is there a chapter in the history of Milan that particularly moved you?

“I always followed Milan when I was little. It’s hard not to remember the Milan that won the Champions League, the Milan of Tassotti, Baresi, Maldini, Rijkaard, Gullit, van Basten, Costacurta… I remember these times very well and how Milan marked football with these players.”
