According to a report from Lance, Gerson could be set for an emotional send-off at Flamengo, with the Club World Cup round-of-16 tie against Bayern Munich potentially his final appearance for the club. The midfielder has agreed terms with Zenit Saint Petersburg, and Flamengo have indicated that if eliminated by Bayern in Miami, Gerson will depart immediately after the tournament.

Zenit are set to activate the €25 million release clause for the player, with Flamengo requiring the payment in full and upfront to finalize the deal. Club president Alexander Medvedev confirmed the agreement, stating, “There are pre-requisites (an agreement) for Gerson’s transfer to Zenit. Wait for the official announcements.” Gerson will sign a five-year contract in Russia, reportedly tripling his current wages—a significant financial incentive that, according to Lance, played a decisive role in the midfielder’s decision.

Gerson’s second spell at Flamengo has solidified his reputation as one of the squad’s most influential figures. Since returning from Marseille in January 2023, he has made over 200 appearances, contributed 15 goals and 28 assists, and played a key role in a string of recent titles, including back-to-back Carioca championships, the 2024 Copa do Brasil, and the 2025 Supercopa do Brasil. Gerson also emerged as a captain and regular selection for the national team during this period.

His initial stint in Rio, running from mid-2019 to his first departure in 2021, saw him cement his status, with 109 games, seven goals, 10 assists, and eight trophies—including Libertadores and Brasileirão crowns. Now, with an offer that matches both his on-field influence and off-field ambitions, his Flamengo journey appears set to end where it began: on the international stage.

Should Flamengo bow out to Bayern, the Miami clash will likely mark farewell for both a captain and an emblematic figure in recent club history.
