Paul Pogba is looking for his next team ahead of his return to the pitch following his doping-related suspension, but Fiorentina didn’t take the bait after being offered the player by agents and intermediaries, Corriere dello Sport informs (via Goal).
The midfielder partially won his appeal after an initial four-year ban and will be able to play in March. He can technically already sign with a new team and start practicing. He tested positive for a banned substance back in August 2023.
Fiorentina thought about putting Pogba under the contract, but they have elected not to for the time being. The Viola believe to be set in his role having set Nicolò Fagioli, Cher Ndour, and Michael Folorunsho in January. According to ESPN, the parties briefly discussed an 18-month contract.
His contractual requests are significant. He was making €8M annually at Juventus before the whole ordeal. He has featured just 12 times in his return to Turin due to the botched handling of a knee injury.
The 31-year-old had a minimum salary during his suspension. The Bianconeri decided to cut ties with him before he resumed being eligible to play.
He’s not too old, but there were big question marks about his fitness before the disqualification. He’ll need months to round back into playing shape, so he’d be a signing for next season at this point. The Viola would arguably be a decent fit, as they have had their fair share of successful reclamation projects, although with younger players. His demands will be a factor in determining his next team. It’d be very surprising to see him back in Serie A.
