FC Dallas continues to strengthen its squad for the 2024 MLS season, and this time, they’ve brought in a name that might fly under the radar for some but carries an intriguing background: Osaze Urhoghide. The 24-year-old Dutch center back arrives from Amiens SC in France’s Ligue 2, signing a contract through 2028 with an option for 2029.
Don’t be fooled by the fact that Urhoghide recently played in France’s second division. The Dutch defender has made his way through competitive leagues like England’s Championship, Belgium’s Jupiler Pro League, and even had a stint with Celtic FC, one of Scotland’s biggest clubs. He’s racked up 100 professional appearances, with 3 goals and 1 assist along the way.
Urhoghide is known for his defensive presence. While primarily a center back, he can also slot in as a right-back, giving Dallas some flexibility at the back.
Urhoghide’s arrival is part of a broader defensive rebuild, which also saw the additions of Lalas Abubakar (free agent) and Shaq Moore (acquired from Nashville SC). With these new faces, the backline is set to have a completely different look in 2024.
The big question now is how head coach Eric Quill, stepping into his first season in charge, plans to shape the defensive unit. Chemistry among the new signings will be key to Dallas’ success, and their season opener against Houston Dynamo FC on February 22 will offer an early glimpse into how things are coming together.
Urhoghide isn’t a household name, but he could turn out to be a smart addition. His track record suggests he has what it takes to compete in solid European leagues, and MLS continues to grow in quality. If he adapts quickly to the American game, he could become a key piece for FC Dallas.
The risk? It’s always there. Transitioning from Europe to MLS isn’t always seamless, and the fact that he’s played for clubs outside the top tier of their leagues raises questions about whether he can stand out in this new environment.
Only time will tell if this move turns out to be a masterstroke or just another signing that fades into the background.
