FC Bayern Women go in search of their first domestic double as they take on Werder Bremen in the DFB Cup final in Cologne on Thursday (kick-off: 4pm CEST). Having successfully completed their Bundesliga title defence last Sunday, the Munich Frauen are now out to lift Germany’s cup for the second time and make history.

Latest news from Bayern

Bayern are into the final for the second year in a row and looking to win the DFB Cup for the second time, after 2012’s success. They have so far eliminated Sand (6-0), Freiburg (2-1), Eintracht Frankfurt (4-1 a.e.t.) and Hoffenheim, coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 thanks to a Pernille Harder hat-trick, on their road to Cologne.

Alexander Straus’s team are on a high going into the final, having beaten Freiburg 3-1 at the FC Bayern Campus last weekend to retain the Bundesliga title for the third year in a row. Now they can make more history with a first domestic double for the club.

7 milestones on Bayern’s road to Bundesliga glory:

Opponent: Werder Bremen

Bremen beat arch-rivals Hamburg 3-1 in front of a record crowd of 57,000 at HSV’s Volksparkstadion to reach the final of the women’s DFB Cup for the first time. Thomas Horsch’s side also knocked out Arminia Bielefeld (4-0), Fortuna Köln (3-0) and Bayer Leverkusen (1-0) on their historic run.

Werder are currently seventh in the Bundesliga and got ready for Thursday’s showpiece with a comfortable 3-0 win over Carl Zeiss Jena at the weekend.

Team news

Georgia Stanway is still sidelined with her knee ligament injury. Lena Oberdorf and Katharina Naschenweng are back in training but not yet ready to feature in Thursday’s final. Alara Şehitler is available again after a knock to her knee.

Pernille Harder got the only goal of the game the last time Bayern faced Werder Bremen.

Pre-final quotes

Alexander Straus: “Bremen have made good progress in recent years. They’ve produced consistent performances and always make games difficult for us. They can hurt us on the pitch – we know that. I’ve got the pleasure of experiencing the cup final in Cologne for a second time. We obviously want a better outcome for us this time than we had last year.”

Magdalena Eriksson: “We’ve got the chance to achieve something great. You always need to be ready and at it from the start in a final. What counts is the result after the game. We’re capable of deciding games in our favour in different ways. We’ve developed a winning culture here. I’m excited about tomorrow.”
