There are mixed reports in Italy on the Azzurri XI against Switzerland, but Gianluca Scamacca will likely return to the starting line-up, while Jorginho fights Nicolò Fagioli for a central midfield spot.

Italy are preparing to meet Switzerland in the EURO 2024 Round of 16 on Saturday and it’s still not entirely clear who will start in Berlin tomorrow.

Riccardo Calafiori is suspended, and Gianluca Mancini is the favourite to start, according to Gazzetta, even if Sky Sport Italia and Il Corriere dello Sport predict Spalletti will eventually pick Alessandro Buongiorno.

The CT is expected to confirm a three-man defence with Alessandro Bastoni starting despite having a fever on Thursday. The Inter defender warmed up separately from the rest of the team on Friday, while Federico Dimarco didn’t join his teammates on the pitch.

Scamacca was benched against Croatia on Monday but Italian sports papers claim he will return to the starting XI against Switzerland.

It remains to be seen if Chiesa will start, especially if Spalletti uses a 3-5-2 system. As per Gazzetta, however, the Juventus star will join Scamacca in a 3-4-2-1 system, which will offer Spalletti two options.

The coach may use Nicolò Barella as an attacking midfielder or play the Inter star in central midfield with Jorginho. In this case, Davide Frattesi would play as an attacking midfielder.

According to Il Corriere dello Sport, another option is to start both Chiesa and Mattia Zaccagni behind Scamacca.

Tuttosport, on page six, suggests that Spalletti is tempted to start Fagioli in place of Jorginho, who has always been replaced in the opening three matches.
