Marco Asensio, on loan from Paris Saint-Germain, made his Aston Villa debut in their 2-1 FA Cup win over Tottenham on Sunday at Villa Park.
The veteran played 24 minutes in the win over Tottenham and provided one key pass. With a positive start to his tenure, transfer expert Fabrizio Romano provided the latest on the veteran attacker’s future.
The Spanish midfielder will remain with the Premier League club until the end of the 2024-25 season. Aston Villa will cover his full salary until June, but there is no option to make the move permanent, per Romano.
Journalist Duncan Castles provided further insight into the deal, revealing that Villa opted against a purchase option because PSG insisted on a loan fee. Given the club’s concerns over Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) restrictions, they decided against paying the additional cost.

According to Romano, there is no option to buy for Asensio. However, Aston Villa and PSG are open to a potential permanent move in the summer, depending on his performances. The situation will be evaluated in June.
Recently, Birmingham Live’s Aston Villa correspondent, John Townley, had high praise for the former Real Madrid talent in his player ratings article, giving him an 8/10 and stating:
“Gave the Villa fans something to cheer moments after coming on as he performed a roulette to create space and keep possession,” Townley wrote. “More flicks and tricks to come.”
Meanwhile, Charlie Haffenden of Birmingham World was also impressed with Asensio, giving him an 8/10 rating and saying:
“[Asensio] dazzled whenever he gained possession and didn’t misplace a single pass,” Haffenden wrote. “Created an excellent chance for Rogers after plucking the ball out of the sky.”
