Crystal Palace are weighing up a late move for Toulouse defender Jaydee Canvot as doubts continue to grow over Marc Guehi’s future at Selhurst Park.
With Guehi entering the final year of his contract and no agreement on an extension, Palace have begun identifying long-term replacements, and 19-year-old Canvot has emerged as a leading candidate.
Canvot only signed his first professional contract with Toulouse last summer, committing until June 2029, but his rise has been swift. He made his senior debut in September and featured in 18 Ligue 1 matches across the 2024/25 campaign, including 12 starts under manager Carles Martinez.
This season, the teenager has cemented his place as a key figure, playing every minute of Toulouse’s opening fixtures, including wins over Nice and Brest. His composure and athleticism have not gone unnoticed, with several Premier League clubs sending scouts to monitor his progress.
The French youth international also caught the eye during the Maurice Revello Tournament in June, where he played a pivotal role in France’s triumph. Those displays have only strengthened his reputation as one of the brightest young defenders in European football.
Oliver Glasner is looking to reshape his squad after a summer of limited business. So far, Palace have added goalkeeper Walter Benitez and full-back Borna Sosa, but defensive reinforcements are now considered a priority.
Guehi, the club captain, remains central to the conversation. The 24-year-old England international has long been admired by Liverpool and is widely expected to move on either this summer or at the end of his contract in 2026. Palace are reluctant to lose him without a replacement, and Canvot is viewed as a potential successor capable of growing into that role.
The Eagles are also monitoring Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong as part of their defensive succession planning, though Canvot’s immediate first-team experience at Toulouse may give him the edge in Glasner’s thinking.
Toulouse are understood to be open to a sale should their €20m (£18m) valuation be met. Aston Villa tested the waters with an opening offer last week, but it fell short of the French side’s expectations.
With the transfer deadline approaching, Palace are considering whether to make a formal approach. Their need for defensive stability is heightened not only by Guehi’s contractual situation but also by the club’s broader ambition to strengthen before the season gathers pace.
Palace’s transfer focus is not limited to defence. The departure of Eberechi Eze to Arsenal has created a void in attacking areas, with Glasner keen to secure additional reinforcements before the window closes. However, the priority remains ensuring the backline is equipped for the challenges ahead.
For now, Canvot represents one of the most viable options. At 19, he is seen as a player who could provide immediate cover while also developing into a cornerstone of Palace’s future. Whether the Eagles make their move may depend on how quickly Guehi’s situation is resolved.
