Bolton bounced back from their opening day defeat at Stockport County with an impressive victory over Plymouth Argyle, treating their home fans to a clinical display.

Despite only having 39% possession, Bolton struck with their only two efforts on target all afternoon, while the defence didn’t allow the Pilgrims to have a single effort on target for the whole of the 90 minutes.

Eoin Toal got the goalscoring underway after 21 minutes, before Mason Burstow grabbed his first goal in Bolton colours on the hour mark to cement an important victory to get their season up and running.

Steven Schumacher’s men will now be hoping to build on this result to get themselves challenging for promotion back to the Championship, with his side travelling to Yorkshire to take on Barnsley on Saturday afternoon.

After Burstow continued his early Bolton stint with another encouraging performance, Don Goodman spoke to FLW about the role he can play for the remainder of the season.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit Goodman reveled in Burstow’s performance against Plymouth, believing his goal can inspire confidence in his game for the early stages of the campaign.

Goodman said: “Yeah, Bolton were impressive at home against Plymouth at the weekend.

"A really dominant display and Mason Burstow, evidently, was at the heart of it.

“It’s great for him to stick the ball in the back of the net. Young players, particularly, well, all players actually, thrive on confidence, and as a striker there's nothing that injects more confidence into you than scoring goals.

"So it's a real positive sign for Mason Burstow, and it's a real positive sign for Bolton Wanderers.”

Bolton have had their fair share of links to recruiting a new striker during the summer transfer window, with the likes of Celtic’s Johnny Kenny and Charlton Athletic’s Gassan Ahadme, although none of these moves have come to fruition.

And they may not for the rest of the transfer window if Mason Burstow can carry on his early form.

The ex-Hull City frontman had an impressive debut at Stockport County, despite defeat, and has now followed it up with an equally positive display against Plymouth, which has led to him opening his account at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

The last thing the club should do is recruit a new striker and take Burstow out of the firing line when his confidence is up, with the forward possessing the talent to score regular goals at this level provided he is in the right system and remains a valued member of the squad.

Those two things appear to be marrying up after the first two games of the third-tier season, and Bolton should carry on as they are for now, as they could have a striker on their hands who can deliver enough ammunition for a sustained promotion push.
