Sheffield United are keeping tabs on Lewis Koumas
Sheffield United's pursuit of Liverpool forward Lewis Koumas has resurfaced this week, and Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie believes the 19-year-old could thrive at Bramall Lane.
Despite a modest loan spell at Stoke City last season, where he registered just five league goal contributions across 43 appearances, Koumas is still seen as a player with significant upside.
The Blades, according to the Daily Mail, are weighing up a fresh loan move for the youngster as they prepare for life under new head coach Ruben Selles.
Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Lee Hendrie was optimistic about Koumas' ceiling, even if his numbers at Stoke weren't eye-catching.
"Again, a player with lots of potential," Hendrie said. "When he first had his opportunity of getting into the Stoke side, he really showed what he was capable of doing."
However, Hendrie acknowledged the challenge Koumas faced in a turbulent Stoke setup: "The unfortunate thing is that he was in a Stoke side last season that just couldn't get any consistency. They were winning games, then losing games. That is just difficult for a young player to really grasp and take on board."
While Koumas didn’t light up the Championship last season, Hendrie stressed the importance of loan spells like these for young players, especially those trying to adapt to the physical and tactical demands of senior football.
“This is all about experience and getting a taste for it,” he said. “Sheffield United, a side with so much promise, will want to go again and push for promotion this coming season. I think Koumas could be a really good signing.”
Hendrie also sees a stylistic fit between the player and the club’s ambitions: “The way Sheffield United play, if Koumas can hit the ground running and get a consistent run of games, I think they could get the very best out of him.”
The Blades are entering a new chapter after parting ways with Chris Wilder following their heartbreaking play-off final defeat to Sunderland. With former Southampton, Reading and Hull City boss Ruben now at the helm, a youthful and dynamic squad is expected to be a priority.
And Koumas, highly-rated by Liverpool’s academy, could be a low-risk, high-reward addition to the attacking department if Sheffield United are able to provide the platform he needs.
